Sutton Coldfield MP Andrew Mitchell, Culture Secretary Sajid Javid (Bromsgrove) and Dudley South’s Chris Kelly were among 150 Conservative MPs to back an amendment to explicitly outlaw abortion on the basis of gender.
The Conservative amendment by Congleton MP Fiona Bruce was rejected by the Commons after MPs were told the backbench proposal would not change the law.
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was joined by Aidan Burley (Cannock Chase), Karen Lumley (Redditch), Chris Pincher (Tamworth), and Caroline Spelman (Meriden) in joining the ayes.
